The Natural Contract, 2024
‘The Natural Contract’ is a series of large-scale drawings on fabric (2.4 x 2.5 metres). The drawings imagine a profound political shift that places the natural world at the centre of human ethics and governance, away from an anthropocentric understanding of democracy and social contracts. In this works, the very seats of political assemblies – the interiors of existing parliament buildings – are reconceptualised as spaces that account for the agency of non-human entities forming part of a larger ecological system. The images are drawn on bedsheets, simultaneously representing the tendency to ‘sleep over’ ecological problems and the need to dream of drastically new legal and political frameworks and forms of governance.
